Small but wonderful sushi spot, if you're considering it I highly recommend checking it out! Reservations were easy same day but needed id say due to small size of the dining room. We sampled a few dishes but our favorite was the sashimi tasting. Next time we'll go right to it and the nigiri one as well. The fish and other food was all excellent, but the amazing service and friendly advice from the chef (we sat at the bar) helped us to get the most out of our visit. Their drink program was good, but we stuck to some of their saki offerings and were really pleased.

I wanted some quality sushi for under $300 while visiting San Francisco and Kuma did not disappoint. I had a reservation for dinner and was seated at the sushi bar. A bottle of water was placed in front of me and I told the sushi chef I would like the deluxe chirashi sushi. I think the preferred procedure is to place the order with the wait staff but they accommodated me. Most of the sushi restaurants I have been in around the world have you place your order directly with the chef when sitting at the bar. The chef sliced various types of fish and arranged them on top of the rice in the bowl. Too many places are using pre-sliced fish. The rice was an interesting mixture of rices and I believe small portions of tofu. I also had ama ebi and masaba sashimi. The fish was fresh and delicious and I could taste the difference between the various fishes. And the shiso leaves were fresh as well. Kuma definitely has a the comfortable air of a well liked neighborhood restaurant that happens to have a pretty good sushi bar. The service was friendly and prompt and welcoming.

YUM! We came here for a date night on a Friday around 7 PM and were glad we had a reservation. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so I would definitely recommend having a reso if you're going during peak hours. All the fish was fresh, and the rice was soft and delicious. We always get hamachi appetizers if they're on the menu, and this one is one of our favorites! The fish melted in our mouths, and the sauce was so flavorful. We can't wait to come back!

I ordered a Negi Hama roll, and 5 pieces: Isaki, Sake, Hamachi, Uni, Chu toro. Simply super fresh fish, at a great price. I think it's unlikely to get higher value than this. Go cheaper, and you will likely compromise on fish quality. Go more expensive, and I struggle to think that the fish will improve. Are the pieces wildly imaginative? No, but they are great and don't need to be, because the fresh raw fish explodes with flavor. Pieces are paired thoughtfully with good flavor combinations, and the rice was good (a low bar some places fail to clear) The chu toro was fresh, creamy, and flavorful, and the uni, for which I was recommended the Santa Barbara over the more expensive Hokkaido due to this year's better crop, was as sweet as I've had. Service was exceptional, and my water cup never fell below half.
